Simulating earthquake source using combined finite discrete element method

The combined (or hybrid) finite discrete element method has the potential to simulate continua and discontinua mechanics at the same time. Currently there are Finite element simulating earthquake wave propagation and discrete element simulating earthquake fracturing. Why not the combination of both simulates the occurrence of cracks in the near field and elastic wave propagation in the far-field? This is just an idea and I wonder if anyone has published something like that. The combined finite discrete element method executive files I got from VGW shows very impressive results.
